Philippa Hanna was raised in a musically gifted family, surrounded by internationally acclaimed artists. Her brother, Stuart Zender, was a founding member of the multi-platinum acid-jazz/pop band Jamiroquai, while her cousins Danny and Richard Macnamara found success as part of the UK rock band Embrace. Country music was a formative influence for Philippa, thanks to her father, Irish entertainer Pat Hanna, and her cousin Sandy Kelly—a country star who recorded with the legendary Johnny Cash.
From the stage, Philippa often shares her personal journey, including a difficult teenage battle with anxiety and depression that led her to leave full-time education. “That was the darkest time imaginable,” she recalls. “I thought I’d never live a normal life.” A powerful spiritual experience at a Godfrey Birtill concert in 2004 changed the course of her life, igniting a deep Christian faith that became the foundation for her music and writing. Since then, Philippa has become an internationally published author and seasoned performer, with over 1,500 live shows, five studio albums, and two books to her name.
Whether performing solo or alongside her husband Joel, Philippa is known for her authentic storytelling, uplifting messages, and catchy, genre-blending songs. She’s toured with major artists including Lionel Richie, Leona Lewis, Wet Wet Wet, and Little Mix, and holds a respected place in the Christian music scene. Collaborations with Kevin Max (D.C. Talk), Graham Kendrick, and songwriter Chris Eaton have further cemented her presence.
Many fans are surprised to realize they already know her music—thanks to regular airplay on Christian radio, and appearances on TV shows like TBNUK’s Praise The Lord and the BBC’s Songs of Praise. Songs like Raggedy Doll, The Daffodil Song, Arrow, and Off The Wagon continue to resonate widely. Her country roots have also been celebrated on BBC Radio 2, including features on Good Morning Sunday and Bob Harris’s Country show.
