There is estimated to be up to 103 million Chinese Christians, and Christianity is considered the fastest-growing faith in China. But these Christians face the threat of persecution and suppression by their government, who even in late 2016 set out harsh new religious restrictions. With increases in persecution and a lack of Bibles and Christian leaders, it’s clear that there is a very real danger to the Christian church in China. With this in mind Paul Hattaway, author of the bestselling The Heavenly Man, sets out to explore the history of this Chinese revival. Focusing on Shandong province, which since 1947 has seen a forty-fold growth in its number of Christians, he examines how the church has developed from its beginnings 150 years ago to the explosive growth of recent decades and the people who have made the Chinese church what it is today. In doing so, he provides Chinese believers with some sense of their own roots, while demonstrating the astonishing work that has been happening in China and the danger that is still present.
